Sunday 28th June 2009

Another day of impossible choosing - should I show a jellyfish, the surf, GB on the shore, a Meadow Brown butterfly, an Orchid or a Meadow Pipit?

I settled for the Meadow Pipit, singing away.

A mason wasp - it's quite harmless, honestly!

Wednesday 24th June 2009

How do I choose from over three hundred photos taken today?

In the end I settled for this one of a flock of terns. Not the best photo technically but it summed up a wonderful day of wildlife spotting.

Tuesday 23rd June 2009

I had two long walks today so choosing which photo to use was hard. But I'm a sucker for butterflies and just couldn't resist using this photo of a Common Blue.

This two-on rock in Stornoway library is Lewisian Gneiss from a nearby quarry. It is one of the oldest known rocks on the earth's surface.

Don't worry, SS, if you're short of things to photograph there's bound to be a cat around!

Friday 19th June 2009

Nearly midnight and not a decent photo taken yet. Fortunately I was saved by this cloud which Caroline pointed out - can you spot the duck!

It was actually more duck-like when she spotted it but by the time I'd got the camera it was dissipating a bit.

The view of some of the Scottish mainland mountains from GB's garden, over 60 kilometres away!

From Rambles from my Chair

The mountains were as clear and crisp as I have ever seen them.

Monday 15th June 2009

The garden centre by the Co-op in Stornoway has a small pet section and there is always some creature or creatures of interest to catch the eye.

From Project 355

This Tortoise was very friendly and came up to the glass of his cage to say ‘Hello’ to me. For a tortoise he was very fast and positively tore around his cage.

Saturday 13th June 2009

The sun about to rise at 4.15 a.m.. In fact it never appeared as it went behind the clouds before actually topping the hill on which the houses of Upper Bayble can be seen silhouetted.

From Project 355

A beautiful sunny day with the occasional shower followed.

Monday 8th June 2009

A beautiful sunny day - though cold and breezy - saw us go to Stornoway for coffee as usual.

Lews Castle looked attractive across the harbour.

Sunday 7th June 2009

I watched Jenson Button in his Brawn-Mercedes win the Turkish Grand Prix on GB's big TV screen.

/div>
So far he has won five of the first six grand prix and been on the podium for all of them - only Ascari, Senna and Schumacher have ever done that before.   Not bad company to be in.

This was the sort of day when photos from indoors were much more sensible than going outside to be battered by the Force 6 winds and occasional heavy showers.

When you live on the Isle of Lewis a sheepskin coat can be handy. Especially when the wind is as cool as it has been today.

Tuesday 2nd June 2009

When the Silver Y moths arrive from abroad they usually do so at the same time as certain other migrants.

As if to prove the rule yesterday's Silver Y's were followed today by a Painted Lady in GB's garden. Like the moths they will have come from the continent. It's amazing to think how far they can travel. And, as soon as they get here, they breed. No jet lag for them.

Monday 1st June 2009

And so begins another month.

From Project 355

This is a Silver Y moth - an immigrant species that has possibly travelled hundreds of miles to be here on the Isle of Lewis.
